During the Winter Block Week (January 6-10), we will offer the following workshops for UCalgary faculty, staff, students and researchers. 

Journals, OER & Publishing 

AI in Scholarly Publishing | Jan 7 | 12pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Get an overview of the basics of machine learning and AI, and learn some of the key issues authors must consider when using AI tools in academic writing. 

Break Barriers, not the Bank: Open Access Publishing Tips | Jan 10 | 12:30pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Learn how researchers can make scholarly work open access, with a focus on no-fee options. 

From Draft to Done: Understanding Peer Review | Jan 8 | 12pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
This session demystifies the peer review process and give researchers the tips, tricks, and best practices. We’ll also explore what makes a strong peer reviewer, equipping you with the skills to provide constructive, meaningful critiques. 

How to Communicate Your Research Impact | Jan 9 | 11am | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Learn how the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) is changing research assessment practices in Canada and globally, and how to tell the research impact story including the significance, quality, and impact of broad scholarly contributions.  

So You Want to Start a Journal: UCalgary's Journal Hosting Service | Jan 6 | 2pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Learn the significant steps of starting a journal using the OJS platform, along with considerations and supports for new and existing journals provided by LCR’s Journal Hosting Support Team. No previous knowledge required. 

Foundations in Open Educational Resources | Jan 9 | 1pm | ONLINE | REGISTER
Get an overview of what OER are, approaches for integrating them into teaching and learning practices, and ways for accessing and assessing OER resources and tools.

Open Education Alberta: Creating with Pressbooks | Jan 10| 1pm | ONLINE | REGISTER
Learn how to develop open educational resources (OER) in Pressbooks, examples of published Pressbooks OERs, and supports for creating OER at UCalgary.

Research Data Management 

Intro to Data Management Plans | Jan 7 | 1pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
This session examines the key questions to consider when preparing a DMP, and will introduce the DMP Assistant online tool for preparing a plan. 

Intro to Research Data Management | Jan 6 | 1pm | ONLINE | REGISTER
Get an overview of research data management and how to implement best practices in your own project. We will focus particularly on how to use the DMP Assistant tool to create a data management plan.  

PRISM and PRISM Data | Jan 9 | 12pm | ONLINE | REGISTER
Learn about the benefits and limitations of PRISM Data, how to prepare your data for sharing, and depositing datasets for longer term access. Attendees are welcome to bring along their datasets should they wish to create an account and start depositing data.  

Research Skills 

Addressing Research Challenges with SAGE Research Methods | Jan 6 | 12pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Get an overview of how SAGE Research Methods guides users through every step of the research process. This session focuses on Research Tools in the platform: the Methods Map, Project Planner, Which Stats Test, and Reading Lists – and how the tools, content, and platform features can help users address and overcome research challenges.   

Digital File Management | Jan 7 | 10am | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Managing digital files and research materials is critical for keeping yourself organized, collaborating with colleagues, and communicating with mentors. We will explore an exercise to create a digital file management system that addresses your needs, and a README file to document a hierarchical organizational system for folders, and introduce tools for batch naming/renaming files and folders, versioning. 

Intro to Personal Digital Archiving | Jan 8 | 1pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
This session will provide an overview of best practices for increased longevity of your personal digital archives such as digital photographs, web content, AV materials, research and creative projects.  

LaTeX and Overleaf | Jan 9 | 10am | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Come learn the basics of how to use an open source typesetting program (LaTeX) to produce professional documents and PDF files (for theses and papers) as well as an online interface (Overleaf) for creating and collaborating on LaTeX documents. 

Exploring Primary Sources in the Digital Library | Jan 9 | 2pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Delve into the world of primary sources, gaining insights into their significance and relevance in scholarly research. We will explore various archives, enabling participants to navigate and locate relevant materials efficiently.

Research Data Tools 

Data Visualization and Tools | Jan 6 | 10:30am | ONLINE | REGISTER 
This workshop will provide an introduction to data visualization through, including making charts through data encoding (how to transform data into imagery), and an overview of a variety of data visualization tools and software freely available to students. 

Data Visualization with Tableau | Jan 7 | 2pm | TFDL 440A | REGISTER 
This session will focus on fundamentals of importing data and using Tableau to create visualization. Tableau is a great tool that supports a variety of data formats and allows fast exploration to find the visualization most suited to the data. Bonus: it’s free for students! 
 
Intro to Census Data | Jan 8 | 11am | ONLINE | REGISTER 
An overview of what census data is, an explanation of different census data boundaries (tracts, census subdivisions), and an introduction to helpful resources and ways to access this valuable data. 

Intro to R Syntax, Part 1 | Jan 6 | 4pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Learn to read and write R scripts to do computations, data manipulation and simple analysis. Get hands-on coding experience via a web application (no software installation is required to attend!) Participants will learn the rules of the R syntax to better understand an introductory book or internet recipes for solutions. Great for undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning R with no programming experience.  
 
Intro to R Syntax, Part 2 | Jan 7 | 4pm | ONLINE | REGISTER 
In part 2, students learn the remaining data structures to model and manipulate data: factors, matrices, arrays, lists, and the data frame. This session will cover the basics of subsetting and ordering for data structures as well as user functions and basic control flow.

Need a fast, secure way to transfer or share large datasets? Join us to learn how to use Globus – a powerful tool that enables secure data sharing with collaborators across institutions.

Learn core principles and methods for managing research workflows more effectively. Learn how Workflow Management Systems (WfMS) can help organize and automate data-intensive research processes, making it easier to handle large amounts of data. 

Qualitative Data Visualization | Jan 10 | 10am | ONLINE | REGISTER 
Data visualization helps people transform data into visuals that make it easier to identify patterns, trends, and outliers.  But most data visualization sessions focus on working with numeric, quantitative data; this session takes the opposite approach and is all about qualitative data.   We will cover a variety of data visualization techniques for working with text, networks, hierarchies, and other non-numeric datasets.
