Background and research interests

Marina Gavrilova is a full professor and associate head in the Department of Computer Science, and an international expert in the area of biometric security, machine learning, pattern recognition, data analytics, and information fusion.

Dr. Gavrilova is a co-founder of the Biometric Technologies Laboratory and the SPARCS laboratory for interdisciplinary computational sciences research, as well as a Founding Editor-in-Chief of a Springer Transactions on Computational Sciences Journal. Dr Gavrilova serves on Editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Sciences, IEEE Access, the Visual Computer, the International Journal of Biometrics and the International Journal of Cognitive Biometrics, as well as on IEEE Transactions on Biometrics, Behavior, and Identity Science Steering Committee. List of publications includes three co-authored books, over 30 books of conference proceedings, and 200+ peer-reviewed papers on machine learning, biometric security, and multi-modal cognitive system architectures.

Dr. Gavrilova's professional excellence and international stature were recognized by Senior ACM and Senior IEEE membership status, as well as the prestigious Canada Foundation for Innovation, Killam Foundation, and the University of Calgary U Make a Difference Awards.

Her research interests include machine learning, biometric security, image processing and information fusion.
